Course Description


This course is designed for international Korean students whose first language is Korean and who intend to learn the skills necessary for Korean-to-English and English-to-Korean translation and interpretation.  It will also help students to further enhance their English language proficiency by exposing them to a variety of contexts, from daily conversations to documents translation.

Course Content

Lectures:
Students will have classroom lectures based on basic and relevant aspects of translation such as grammar, sentence structure, vocabulary, expressions and slang, and terminology.

Assignments:
In this course, a wide range of assignments will be given to students that include reading and written translation, timed translation and interpretation, critical reviewing of published works of established reputation in both Korean and English, vocabulary and grammar drills, and research and translation.

Class Work:
A variety of activities will be performed in class. Students will prepare lectures and present them in class, scenarios of interpretation will be demonstrated while students are divided in groups, timed translation and interpretation will be carried out that mimic real life situations, and all will be discussed by the students as a peer review aspect.

Evaluation

Students will be evaluated by the instructor and their peers. Different methods of evaluation will be used though the most common are

- Quizzes, tests, and exams
- Interpretation in class under realistic scenarios
- Group projects in which other groups of students will also comment and assess their peers’ work
